BIOMEDICAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT

The Biomedical Sciences Department has a human-focused emphasis in the cellular and molecular aspects of the biomedical sciences and is one of nine academic units in the College of Health and Human Services. The department offers undergraduate degree programs in cell and molecular biology, dietetics, clinical laboratory sciences (medical technology), and M.S. programs in cell & molecular biology and nurse anesthesia. Minors are offered in biomedical sciences, nutrition, molecular biology, and exercise biology.  Over 400 undergraduate and 54 graduate students currently have majors in the department.  The department also offers coursework that supports the programs in physical therapy, physician assistant studies, sports medicine and athletic training, nursing, and gerontology. There are fourteen full-time faculty members. The department facilities provide a standard array of shared equipment, including a tissue culture laboratory, fluorescence microscopes, and an electron microscopy facility featuring scanning electron microscopy and X-ray microanalysis capabilities. Inter-college research collaboration is encouraged, and research opportunities may be possible with the Jordan Valley Innovation Center, a corporate/university R&D center focused on developing product applications resulting from the fusion of biotechnology and nanotechnology.
