SmithKline Beecham is a leader in functional genomics as applied to pharmaceutical research and development. The Department of Comparative Genetics conducts gene-based biology in model organisms (primarily yeast and mouse) to identify and validate drug targets, to develop drug screens, and to generate animal models for human disease. The Department is currently expanding to create an inhouse Caenorhabditis elegans genetics group.
The Department of Comparative Genetics has an immediate opening for a Ph.D. scientist (Investigator / Senior Investigator) to exploit C. elegans as a model organism to identify and characterize the functions of novel genes and their human counterparts. C. elegans genetics will also be used to investigate the mechanisms of action of pharmaceutical agents. Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Genetics or related discipline, plus 3-5 years of relevant post-doctoral experience, and a strong background in classical and recombinant C. elegans genetics. The candidates should possess a proven record of scientific achievement as evidenced by publications in leading scientific journals. SmithKline Beecham scientists are encouraged to publish their research findings.
